The Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division, National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Environmental Protection Agency, under the authority of Section 103 of the Clean Air Act, plans to enter into a cooperative agreement with a qualified nonprofit research organization to support and stimulate their research into mitigation of indoor air pollution. Research areas which EPA will support include (1) air cleaning systems research, such as improvement of the application of particulate and gaseous air cleaners and interaction of ventilation systems with air cleaning systems, for example, the role of the ventilation systems in transporting pollutants such as biocontaminants; (2) research into the impacts of cleaning materials and maintenance products on indoor environments; (3) building system research in such areas as construction materials, materials introduced by occupants and visitors, activities within the building, HVAC, and air filtering systems, movement of air from outside as well as within the building; and (4) aerosol and fine particulate matter research, such as the relationship between indoor and outdoor pollutants, exposure predictions, and modeling.
