The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)requires the
upgrade of a system for the generation of ultrafast optical pulses
over a broad wavelength spectrum ranging from 650nm up to 2300nm. The
system will be used for conducting ultrafast optical measurements on
experimental optoelectronic materials and devices. Additionally, the
system will be used to perform ultrafast measurements on commercially
available optoelectronic components and systems. This pulse generation
system shall consist of a mode-locked titanium:sapphire laser and a
synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The
mode-locked titanium:sapphire laser will be pumped with an existing
Government-owned Spectra Physics Millenia X solid-state diode-pumped
laser emitting 10W at 532nm wavelength. The laser system shall meet the
following specifications, including but not limited to: (A) Mode-Locked
Titanium:Sapphire Laser (1) Average Output Power -- the laser shall
meet the following nominal power levels at these specified wavelengths
with a broadband optics set: 600mW at 700nm, 2W at 800nm, 1.6W at
850nm, 1.2 at 900nm, 550mW at 950nm, and 300mW at 1000nm; (2)Pulse
Duration, Shape and Rate -- the pulse width at the output port of the
laser shall be less than 80fs when the average output power is 1.5W at
a wavelength of 825nm plus/minus 25nm. Pulse duration between690-720nm
wavelengths shall be less than 130fs. The pulse repetition rate shall
be between 70 and 85MHz; (3) Tunability -- the laser shall be
demonstrably tunable over the wavelength range of 700nm to 1000nm using
one or more optic sets. The maximum pulse width over this wavelength
tuning range shall be less than 130fs; (4) Beam Properties -- the full
angle beam divergence of the laser shall be less than 0.6mrad. The
laser shall oscillate in a TEM00 mode; (5) Stability -- the laser shall
incorporate the closed loop temperature control of the
titanium:sapphire rod; (6) Noise -- the noise of the laser shall be
less than 0.5% rms over a 10Hz-2MHz bandwidth; (7) General -- the laser
shall have an option for conversion to picosecond mode by easy and
convenient removal of dispersion management elements from the cavity.
(B) Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO)(1) Average
Output Power -- the average out power of the OPO shall be greater than
300mW at 1550nm plus/minus 25nm when pumped by the laser; (2) Pulse
Duration, Energy, Shape and Rate -- the pulse width exiting the OPO at
1550nm plus/minus 25nm shall be less than 130fs. These specifications
are pulse width specifications assuming a hyperbolic secant squared
pulse shapes, and are not autocorrelation width specifications; (3)
Tunability -- the OPO signal shall be tunable over a wavelength range
from 1100-1620nm using one or more optic sets when pumped with the
optimal power and wavelength from the laser for the given operation
wavelength; (4) Beam Properties -- the full angle beam divergence of
the OPO shall be less than 1mrad; (5) Stability -- the OPO shall have
active cavity length adjustment and stabilization capability so that
its cavity length is always matched to that of the laser to less than
5um accuracy; (6) Noise -- the noise of the OPO shall be less than 2%
rms over a 10Hz-1MHz bandwidth; and (7) General -- the Government's
applications require that the signal and idler beams be temporally
synchronous, but spatially separated by at least 75mm at the output
port of the OPO. An existing 1997 model 3191-SIS Spectra Physics
Tsunami mode-locked titanium:sapphire laser that is now the property of
NIST, is available for trade-in. Bids are due on or about May 1, 2000.
