Operating Room Technicians for duty at Portland, Oregon VA Medical
Center. Duties: The Operating Room Technician functions within the
policies of the VAMC Portland, Oregon. The Contract Operating Room
Technician provides the following services:  The position
requires independent judgment and actions, flexibility, organizational
skills, and the ability to utilize an inter-disciplinary approach in
the provision of care.  Selects and sterilizes routine and
specialized instrument sets and equipment. Independently refers to
procedure books and manuals to correctly select instruments for unusual
procedures.  Prepares, organizes and maintains highly complex
sterile set-ups and skillful draping of the operative field. 
Accurately anticipates and promptly provides for needs of the surgeons.
Minimizes operating time by use of their speed and efficiency. 
Processes instruments and supplies following surgery, including
appropriate care of delicate and/or complex instruments and equipment.
 Assess potential safety hazards to patients or OR personnel.
 Handles surgical specimens appropriately as demonstrated by
correct labeling, recording, appropriate fixative agents and
disposition to appropriate areas.  Assists with the maintenance
of the operating room. This includes maintaining cleanliness and
orderliness of the OR suites, storage areas, corridors and equipment.
Initiates this work independently of supervision  Performs
other duties as assigned. May assist in other areas within the
Operating room areas such as PACU, Day Surgery, Endoscopy, OPC and
Clinic E.  Communicates effectively with patients and staff.
This includes reporting breaks in sterile technique, making out
requests and reports, sharing ideas, relaying messages and performing
errands. Able to assist in the training of new personnel to the scrub
nurse duties. Serves as a role model to other staff members by their
behavior and professional manner.  Assists the RN with care of
patient during surgery by: Transporting the patient to and from the OR
suite using knowledge of safety measures and appropriate
identification. Alert to and promptly reports changes in the patient's
condition. Provides emotional support to the patient and their
families and significant others in the perioperative period. May assist
in the preoperative shave or prepping of the patient. Able to function
skillfully in emergency situations during the perioperative period.
 Performs Operating Room Technician functions as a member of
the direct patient care team, before, during and following surgical
intervention.  Administers medications under the direction of
the circulating RN, anesthesiologist/anesthetist, and or surgeon.
 Provides age-specific care for adult, older adult (65-74) and
geriatric (over 75) patients/groups including the following elements
related to the aging process; promotes independence; encourages
self-care; involves family or designated caregiver with care; provides
any necessary safety measures; and assists patient to cope with and/or
compensate for changes affecting mobility, balance, loss, cognition,
eye sight, hearing, bones, skin and thermo-regulation. Follows
age-specific care requirements and adheres to an appropriate plan of
care.  Anticipates emergencies, coordinates prevention and
evaluates responses through critical analysis of patient situations.
 Performs duties according to the competency checklist for the
assigned areas. Provides the care of the patients in assigned area by
