3. E-MAIL: Lupe M. Velasquez, lvelasquez@mail.arc.nasa.gov. The
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) intends to solicit
research proposals for a set of advanced computer science/information
technology capabilities associated with system intelligence that do not
exist today in support of the Intelligent Systems (IS) Program. In the
last three years NASA has developed a bold vision for Space Science,
Earth Science, Human Exploration, and Aeronautics and Space
Transportation for the twenty first century. This vision focuses on
robotic exploration of deep space to understand the origin and
evolution of life, combined human-robotic exploration of Mars, safe and
cost effective operation of the Space Shuttle and follow-on launch
vehicles to orbit, the use of Earth-orbiting satellites to establish
cause and effect relationships associated with such important phenomena
as global warming, and the development of methodologies to enhance the
safety and capacity of the U.S. air transportation system. The goal of
the IS Program is to enable strategic advancesin computer
science/information technology associated with overall system
(human/machine) intelligence. The IS Program intends to solicit
proposals for basic and applied research in the following four
interrelated areas: (a) Automated Reasoning; (b) Human-Centered
Computing; (c) Intelligent Data Understanding; (d) and Revolutionary
Computing. Participation in this NRA is open to to all categories of
U.S. and non-U.S. organizations, including educational institutions,
industry, nonprofit institutions, NASA Centers, and other Government
agencies. The NASA Research Announcement (NRA) will be available on or
about mid April 2000 via the Internet. The NRA will contain submittal
instructions for a proposal. Posted 03/17/00 (D-SN435522). (0077) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0014 20000321\A-0014.SOL)
