A -- LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS TO COMMERCIALIZE TECHNOLOGY FOR ATTACHING DNA TO SOLID SUPPORTS SOL CBD00-016 DUE 052200 POC Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization office (925) 423-3139 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy is seeking industrial partners to commercialize a technology for attaching DNA to solid materials such as microscopic beads, optical handles, or other support structures any of which may be made of a variety of materials. The technology provides simple means for attaching microscopic beads or other particle-like or support structures to fragments of DNA of unknown sequence, of any length, and having either single-stranded or double-stranded (blunt) ends. DNA attachment may be made so as to be reversible, or alternatively, the technology also provides for covalent tethering of both DNA ends. In neither case is synthesis of oligonucleotide probes necessary. The applications and potential uses may include: (1) the manipulation of DNA with laser tweezers for various force measurements; (2) gentle labeling and manipulation of very large DNA fragments; (3) labeling and manipulation of DNA fragments of unknown sequence; (4) the placement of DNA "monobells" and "dumbbells' of DNA on various substrates; (5) the placement of DNA on substrate suitable for mapping/sequencing; (6) an alternative to gels for treatment/manipulation of very large DNA where shear forces would otherwise make handling difficult or impossible THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT.
