National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute (NCI),
Laboratory of Cell Biology intends to procure on a sole-source basis
with Carl Zeiss Inc., One Ziess Drive, Thornwood, NY 10594 under the
authority of 41.U.S.C. 253 (c)(1), FAR 6.302-1 a Digital Imaging
System. The Laboratory of Cell Biology studies the processing,
transport and metabolism of proteins and small molecules, especially
those related to cancer prevention, development and treatement.
Advanced digital imaging capabilities that are an essential part of
this research program will enhance the investigation of intracellular
interactions of mammalian ATPase VCP, a protein of the AAA family, a
family of intracellular ATPases involved in protein transport,
vesicular and organellar fusion, and is also a component of the 20S
proteosome. The Digital Imaging System must be equipped with the
following salient characteristics: 1) capable of achieving very high
resolution at High (x 1000) magnification; 2) achieve very high
sensitivity tolow level fluorescence with the simultaneous ability to
attenuate high fluorescence levels; 3) the system shall allow the user
to configure the control functions of the software to existing system;
4) capable of storing all images, measurements, annotation overlays and
time information from an experiment in one storage location; 5) the
system shall allow the user to select colors corresponding to exact
wavelengths so that fluorescence images will look as they do in the
microscope; 6) the system shall achieve very high focusing resolution
of the Z-axis and be 100% compatible with Apple Macintosh G4 Computers.
It is the government's belief that these requirements can only be met
by Carl Zeiss Inc., Thornwood, New York. This is not a request for
competitive quotation, however, if any interested party believes it can
