National Institute on Drug Abuse, Intramural Research Program (IRP)
intends to negotiate with the University of Colorado, Denver Colorado,
for a 2 year contract, with 3 one year options, to provide the IRP
with the services of a nicotine brain bank. The contractor will be
responsible for collecting and storing human brains of nicotine
abusers. A detailed medical and nicotine history will be collected on
all specimens stored. The brains will be collected in accordance with
the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act. The University of Colorado is the only
known brain bank that conducts the measurement of nicotinic receptors
and their genes and other biological molecules, in human post mortem
brain tissue. In addition it is the only brain bank that has a proven
technique for the acquisition and preservation of human brain tissue,
which retains the mRNA and protein integrity that is required for
