COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF APRIL 11,2000 PSA#257699 -- INFORMATION ON FENDERING The St. Lawrence Seaway Development
Corporation (Corporation) utilizes wood, rubber, Ultra High Molecular
Weight Polyethylene (UHMWP) and combinations of those materials for
fendering on the approach walls and miter gates at two (2) navigation
locks on the St. Lawrence River in Massena, New York to protect both
the walls/gates and vessels from damage. The vessels using the locks
are both lake and ocean ships ranging up to a maximum size of 730 ft.
in length x 76 ft. in width and drafting up to 26 ft.- 3in. Dependent
upon the location of the fendering, it may be exposed to impact loads
when vessels land on the approach walls, sliding loads as they rub
along the approach walls and miter gates while entering the locks or at
some locations, a combination of both. The Corporation purchases
fendering materials on a recurring basis and is interested in receiving
technical information/specifications and budget costs for fendering
which would function effectively under these conditions. Of particular
interest would be new developments in marine fendering (i.e. composite
rubber/UHMWP fendering). Information shall be forwarded to St. Lawrence
Seaway Development Corporation, PO Box 520, Massena, New York
