Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts is seeking to develop a
flexible standards package of furniture items to support the
audio-visual or advanced technology equipment that is gaining
popularity in courtrooms and courthouse conference rooms throughout the
United States. We are seeking information on manufacturers' standard
products. Accomodating electronic equipment and allowing for
connectivity to building systems may require customization of a
manufacturer's standard product line. The need for customization will
be further defined after an initial review of standard products. Three
basic elements make up a typical package as follows: (1) Audio/Visual
(A/V) Cart: Typically a portable cart which would be located adjacent
to the lectern in the courtroom well. The cart will usually house a
document camera; a display monitor, such as a flat screen computer
monitor; a VCR; a touch screen panel which controls many system
features; and miscellaneous switching devices. A Video printer may also
be housed at the A/V cart. The document camera will be frequently used
by presenters and it should be anticipated that the work surface
height should be appropriate for a wheel chair user. The ability to
adjust the working height of the document camera would add to the
flexibility and function for the user. Space to house the document
camera when not in use is preferred. (2) Monitor Stands: House display
devices, such as large screen televisions (typically 36" direct view
sets), computer monitors, CRT's, and flat screen panels. Stands need to
be at the proper height and angle for viewing by various participants.
Requirements will vary depending upon courtroom layout and design. (3)
Attorney/Counsel "Smart Tables": Similar to conference tables required
to provide wire management for power, phone, data, microphone, and
audio-visual system cabling and connections. Tables typically need to
provide electrical, phone, and data outlets to the work suface. Wire
management features to conceal cabling from view and also accessible
for work are desired in the table design. In addition, the table would
house custom plates provided by the audio-visual installer or the
furniture manaufacturer which allows for connectivity to the A/V
system. (4) Lecterns/Speaker Podiums: Information is also sought on
lecterns and speaker podiums for courtroom use. Typically, the lectern
should allow for height adjustment to accommodate the various heights
of presenters. Lecterns should also provide wire management for
computer setups. The lectern will be outfitted with a microphone
provided by others. Information is also sought on lecterns which would
accomodate wheel-chair bound presenters and would meet the intent of
the American Disabilities Act. Manufacturer's literature on other
presentation items, such as easels, storage units to house equipment
within the courtroom, and work stations/carrels, is also welcomed. In
most cases, furniture provided by a manufacturer would be required to
match as close as possible custom built-in millwork within the
courtroom. The manufacturer would be provided an approved wood sample
for matching purposes. Mobility of all items is also important. A
typical courtroom layout with these elements shown and a narrative
describing how the users work with this equipment is available
electronically at the following address:
