NASA/GSFC plans to issue a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for a forming mandrel, made from GE commercial grade quartz, is used for the heat forming process to slump-thin glass sheets as one step in the production of the Constellation-X Telescopes. 1. The vendor is to procure three pieces of GE quartz glass that meet our dimensional requirements. 2. The vendor is to process one of the three pieces to different dimensions. 3. There are figure accuracy requirements and roughness requirements that must be met. 4. The other two pieces are to remain at the vendor's or be shipped to GSFC upon request. This procurement is being conducted under the Simplified Acquisition Procedures (SAP). NASA/GSFC intends to purchase the items from Rodriguez Precision Optics in Harahan, LA. because they are the only company that can meet our critical specifications for the shape and surface quality requirements and they have worked with us on the forming process to slump thin glass sheets. The Government intends to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12. Interested organizations may submit their capabilities and qualifications to perform the effort in writing to the identified point of contact not later than 4:30 p.m. local time on 5/11/00. Such capabilities/qualifications will be evaluated solely for the purpose of determining whether or not to conduct this procurement on a competitive basis. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed effort on a full and open competition basis, based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the government.
