Bonnie Holland, bholland@pica.army.mil. The U.S. Army TACOM-ARDEC
Product Manager for Small Arms located at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. has
a requirement to develop an improved lightweight tripod, traverse and
elevation mechanism system capable of mounting both the M240B MMG and
the M249 Light Machinegun. The Lightweight ground mount will reduce the
weight and size burden of the M122 tripod but yet enable the Soldier to
deliver high degree of accurate fire from a stable base. The traversing
and elevating mechanism permits controlled manipulation in both azimuth
and elevation and makes it possible to engage predetermined targets
during darkness or periods of reduced visibility. The Lightweight
Ground Mount (LWGM) will contain the the following performance
features: (1) Range Card Capability w/mil fin adjust- ment and bold
shift of fire(2) Stable design on all surfaces without ballast (3)
Simplified/Integrated T&E:Reliable, smooth and allow rapid target
adjustment (4) Foldable/Collapsible mechanism (5) RAM equal to or
better than M122 (6) Lightweight: Threshold: 11 lbs. Objective: 9 lbs.
(7) Quick Weapon Installation, no brackets or adapters, (8) Durable
(9)Ambidextrous (10) Night Vision com- patible. The basic contract is
to design, manufacture, and test two (2) prototype LWGMs followed by
the manufacture and delivery of 20 refined/ improved lightweight ground
mounts for performance evaluation to support Type Classification (TC)
Action with a one-year production option quantity between 3,000 --
6,000 units. A market survey for this program was published in the CBD
on 22 Oct 1999 and a Special Notice was posted on 30 Mar 2000. It is
estimated that RFP DAAE30-00-R-0403 will be disseminated through the
