A -- SIMIAN VACCINE EVALUATION UNITS SOL N01-AI-65314 POC Ms. Cyndie Cotter, Contracting Officer, 301-402-0641 The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) intends to negotiate a modification to its 5 year cost-reimbursement contract with Advanced Bioscience Laboratories, Inc. (ABL), NO1-AI-65314, under authority of 41 USC 253(c)(1) and FAR 6.302-1. This contract provides non-human primates for immunization with candidate SIV or HIV vaccines selected by the NIAID, conducts initial assessment of the resulting immune responses, challenges the animals with infectious virus, and determines whether or not the animals become infected. The negotiated modification will expand the capacity of the contract to accommodate an additional 166 rhesus macaques to be individually housed under biocontainment conditions appropriate for SIV (BSL 2-3) for the remainder of the contract. Ninety-six (96) of these rhesus macaques are infected with SIV as a result of two previous NIAID contracts with ABL (NO1-AI-55260 and NO1-AI-55271) and cannot be moved without jeopardizing studies currently in progress. This modification will accommodate these animals and the associated testing. The other 70 animals are currently virus-free and will be used to conduct a comparative trial of candidate vaccines that will include virus challenge. ABL is the only known source with the capacity to accommodate 166 monkeys, in addition to the 108 monkeys already available under this contract, for vaccine studies requiring BSL 2-3 containment.
