The United States Postal Service intends to issue a solicitation to purchase from 2,380 to 2,400 low Emission Vehicle (LEV) diesel powered, delivery walk -through, aluminum step van body vehicles having a minimum of 12.7 cubic meters (450 cubic feet) and 1,814 kilogram (4,000 pounds) payload capacity, single rear axle, and rear wheel drive. Anticipated solicitation issuance is mid-May with proposals due in mid-June. Any resulting contract award is planned for mid-August and is contingent upon approval of funding by the Postal Service Board of Governors. Delivery is expected to be complete by October 2001. The contract is expected to contain unfunded options for 3,400 vehicles for delivery by October 2002 and an additional 1,000 vehicles for delivery by April 2003.
