Thompson, Contracting Officer (301) 713-2110 ext 116 The NOAA Automated
Surface Observing System (ASOS) program has a need for a
commercial-off-the-shelf instrument, Meteorological Particle Sensor
(MPS), capable of measuring precipitation particle sizes of falling
liquid precipitation (drizzle). The instrument and associated equipment
shall be suitable for installation in an outdoor environment with
weather- tight enclosures, cables, and sensing elements. The
ground-based instrument shall be capable of measuring particle sizes
from 50 to 1000 microns in diameter. Additionally, the sensor shall
measure the number density of particle sizes from 50 to 1000 microns in
diameter. The sensor shall have a 50-micron particle size resolution
and shall operate in precipitation rates up to 15 millimeters per hour.
The sensor shall be capable of measuring drops consistently with wind
speeds up to 15 meters per second. The Government desires to determine
liquid water accumulation from these particles, with a one-minute
temporal resolution. The instrument shall operateon single phase
commercial power. The Government intends to purchase up to two
commercial sensors which can meet the NWS MPS requirement. Vendors may
request a copy of the complete MPS requirement from the contact person
within two weeks of CBD issuance and should respond within four weeks
of CBD issuance. Interested parties should send a sensor descriptive
package (including a brochure) and a request for the MPS requirement to
