20192 76 -- PRODUCTION AND MAINTENANCE (REVISION) OF GRAPHIC PRODUCTS POC
Maggie Russell 703-648-6366 (CO) This is not a notice for a
solicitation. This is a Request for Information (RFI); neither a draft
statement of work nor specifications are available. The information
received will be used as part of a market survey. Over the past 50
years, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has covered the nation with
primary topographic line maps at scales ranging from 1:24,000 to
1:63,360. While limited revision is occurring based on availability of
appropriated and partner funding, the average age of these maps is now
19 years old. With current approaches a complete update of a single map
costs approximately $30,000.00. Over the last decade, the USGS has
initiated a number of new digital map data products, based upon
evolution of technology and customer requirements and funding. These
new programs include digital elevation models, digital orthophoto
quadrangles, the national hydrography dataset, digital land cover, and
the geographic names information system. Additionally, the Bureau of
Land Management has developed a digital version of the public lands
survey system data. The USGS wishes to explore partnerships and
innovative technological solutions for using these data in concert with
other state, local, public and private data sources to provide updated
topographic line maps for the nation. The USGS is interested in
obtaining commercially available information from the vendor community
on their capability and capacity to perform part or all of the
production and maintenance (i.e., revision) of the USGS's primary
series graphic products. This process could include using existing
hardcopy map materials held by the USGS and various categories of
digital data typically shown on these products. These data would be
obtained potentially from several sources including the USGS, other
Federal and State agencies as well as private sector organizations.
Priority and unlimited free access to Government held materials and
data could be negotiated as part of this activity. Integration of these
data and acceptable portrayal consistent with existing product
standards would be required. Such portrayal might include map collar
information and legends, applicable feature symbolization in multiple
colors, shaded relief generation from elevation data and portrayal, and
possible overlaying of selected symbolized data categories on an image
base, e.g. digital orthophoto quadrangle. In addition, all products
would be made available to the public at a reasonable cost and with a
reasonable response time either through current USGS distribution
mechanisms and/or distribution systems established within the vendor
community. All vendors interested in provided information on the above
are invited to submit their literature. No contract will be awarded as
a result of this announcement. Any subsequent solicitation will be
synopsized prior to its release. The Government will not pay for
information provided in response to this synopsis. Information
responding to this request should be received by June 30, 2000. Posted
