NIH-NIDDK-00-561 DUE 071700 POC Patricia Haun, Purchasing Agent,
301-594-8855 The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National
Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has a
requirement to purchase a 14.1 Tesla 89-mm wide-bore superconducting
NMR magnet system. The magnet system shall consist of the main magnet
and superconducting shim coils contained in a low-loss cryostat;
vibration-isolation supports for the magnet; accessories for monitoring
cryogen levels within the cryostat; the initial cooldown and charging
of the magnet, a liquid helium transfer line for periodic helium fills;
and a room temperature shim set for fine adjustments of the magnetic
field homogeneity. The magnet system must meet the following
specifications: 1) The magnet shall be a persistent, superconducting
magnet operating at liquid helium temperature at atmospheric pressure,
with a vertical room-temperature bore with an accessible inner
diameter greater than 88mm. The field strength in the center of the
magnet shall be 14.1 Tesla (600 MHz proton NMR frequency). 2) The drift
rate of the magnetic field after one month of operation shall be less
than 10 Hertz per hour at the proton NMR frequency. 3) The magnetic
field homogeneity at the center of the field shall be better than 0.2
ppm (half-height NMR line width) over a cylindrical volume with 2 cm
diameter and 2 cm length. This specification shall be achieved with
superconducting shim coils installed within the cryostat only, not with
room temperature shims. 4) The consumption of cryogens to maintain
superconductivity under normal operating conditions shall not exceed 60
liters of liquid helium per 90 days and 120 liters of liquid nitrogen
per 14 days. Cryogen level meters for both helium and nitrogen shall be
included. A vacuum-insulated liquid helium transfer line for helium
fills shall be included, compatible with standard liquid helium tanks.
5) The magnet shall be supported on anti-vibration legs such as those
provided for this purpose by Technical Manufacturing Corporation (TMC
legs). 6) Shipping, assembly, installation, cooling, charging, and
adjustment of superconducting shims for optimal field homogeneity shall
be included. 7) The room-temperature shim set shall include at least 26
gradient channels. The inner diameter of the room-temperature shim tube
shall be approximately 73 mm or greater. A power supply to drive the
shim set and all necessary cables shall be included. It shall be
possible to control the shim power supply through the Spinsight 4.1
software and accessory controller hardware of an existing
Varian/Chemagnetics CMX Infinity NMR spectrometer console, which will
be used in conjunction with the 14.1 Tesla magnet system. In addition
to meeting the above specifications, any potential supplier of the
magnet system shall provide the following information with its bid: (a)
A diagram of the fringe fields produced by the magnet. It is desirable
that the distance from the magnet center to the 5 Gauss field line not
exceed 4.0 meters in the horizontal direction and 5.0 meters in the
vertical direction; (b) The minimum celing height required for
installation and operation of the magnet. The supplier shall state
whether it is possible to install and operate the magnet with a 3.1
meter (10 foot, 2 inch) ceiling height. If installation and operation
with a 3.1 meter ceiling height is only possible at extra cost, then
this extra cost should be quoted as a separate, optional item; (c) A
diagram showing the exterior dimensions of the magnet system and the
location of the center of the field; (d) The dimensions and weights of
crates and other large items that must be transported to the magnet
installation site, including the crate containing the magnet itself;
(e) A list of customers who have purchased wide-bore 14.1 Tesla magnets
from the supplier. This notice is for the purchase of commercial
equipment within the simplified Acquisition Threshold of up to $5
million dollars. It is anticipated that Request for Quotation (RFQ)
NIH-NIDDK-00-561 will be available fifteen (15) days after the
publication date of this synopsis. Receipt of quotations will be due
ten days (10) after the release of the RFQ. The anticipated award date
is July 28, 2000. Request for copies of the RFQ must be in writing and
may be FAXED to 301-480-4226. Quotations must be submitted in writing
to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
6705 Rockledge Drive, Building One, Room 8048, Bethesda, Maryland
