Protection Symposium: The Association of Old Crows and the Querque
Crows Chapter will sponsor the Second Annual Spacecraft Protection
Symposium to be held 25-26 July 2000 at the Army Research Laboratory,
Adelphi, Maryland. The theme of the symposium will be "Electronic
Warfare and Space: Protection of Space Assets." The conference chairman
will be Mr. David Hilland, Chief, Spacecraft Protection Technology, Air
Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. The classification
of the symposium will be SECRET US Only. The conference will provide a
forum to review the definition of terms and for discussions by a
nucleus of professionals interested and/or working in this area. Topics
will include threats to Spacecraft; requirements for protection of
Spacecraft; tutorial definition of terms; guidelines for protection;
modeling and simulation tools and ongoing protection development
programs. The keynote speaker will be Maj Gen Brian Arnold, USAF,
Director of Space and Nuclear Deterrence, Office of the Secretary of
the Air Force for Acquisition, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington,
D.C. Session One will cover requirements and will include briefings on:
Spacecraft Protection tutorials; Counterspace Threat Overview
(NAIC/TAIC); Spacecraft Technologies & Projections (Mr. Matt Warner,
NAIC/TATB); Army/Navy/Air Force Spacecraft Protection
Requirements/Roadmaps (USAF/SMC Det 11) and Requirements Analysis
Methodology. Session Two is entitled Modeling and Simulation and
briefings will include: Design Guideline tools (Mr. Chip Hill, Jaycor);
Spacecraft RF/Laser Vulnerability tools; Spacecraft Protection Metrics
(Dr. Carl Bloemker, Jaycor); Spacecraft Protection Methodology (Mr.
Mike Black, Ball Aerospace); Spacecraft Protection Tools for Natural
Threats; Hardened Materials Tools for Satellite Protection; Satellite
Tool Kit Spacecraft Protection applications/modules (Mr. Michael Enoch,
SM&A) and Satellite Survivability Module (Mr. Ron Grotbeck, Ball
Aerospace). Session Three will cover Technologies and current programs.
Briefings include: AFRL Spacecraft Protection Program (Mr. Dave
Hilland, AFRL/VS); Spacecraft RF/Laser Vulnerability (Mr. Joel Davis,
Ball Aerospace); Spacecraft Protection Tools for Natural Threats
(SAIC); Hardened Materials for Satellite Protection (Ms. Elizabeth
Milliken, AFRL/ML); RF Threat Warning/Attack Reporting (Mr. Patrick
Serna, AFRL/VS); Laser Threat Warning/Attack Reporting (Dr. Elizabeth
Beecher, AFRL/SN); Self-Protection ECM for Space Based Assets (Mr. Mike
Cross, Ball Aerospace) and SBIRS Low Survivability Evaluations (AFRL).
