Dept of Commerce/NOAA/NOS/Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment, Silver Spring, MD intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with Analytical Laboratories of Hawaii, Kialua, Hawaii for preparation of GIS maps depicting Benthic Habitats of the Hawaiian Islands. The images will be used to create maps of the region's marine resources including coral reefs, seagrass beds and other important habitats for fisheries, tourism and other aspects of the coastal economy. Accurate habitat maps are necessary for resource managers to make informed decisions about the protection and use of these areas. A primary product of this effort will be a benthic habitat map and geographic information system produced by interpreting aerial images.The benthic habitat map will be produced by manual delineation of habitats from aerial photographs and image analysis software applied to color and hyperspectral digital photographs.
