BATCH HYDROTHERMAL OXIDATION (BHO) FOR PROBLEMATIC WASTE DESTRUCTION The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), its laboratories and production facilities are committed to helping businesses in the U.S. to improve the cycle from new ideas and product innovation to product development and commercialization. In order to achieve this goal, the DOE has put in place a program to transfer technologies developed at its laboratories to the private sector for commercial applications. DOE's objective in doing this is to establish mutually beneficial partnerships that can leverage advanced technologies and enhance the U.S. position in the ever-changing global marketplace. Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) is one of the participating laboratories in this program. By this announcement, Sandia is soliciting expressions of interest from U.S. businesses for potential licensing of the following technology for which a patent has been issued. Sandia National Laboratories has patented and built a batch hydrothermal oxidation (BHO) reactor that provides a unique mobile solution for destroying problematic organic wastes from chemical, medical, biological, military, and nuclear applications. Transportation of such wastes to a central waste facility is often precluded because of safety, public resistance, or regulations. As example, public protest made national news and prompted a railcar shipment of Napalm enroute to Indiana to be returned to California in 1998. This invention would provide a solution to the destruction of such remote organic wastes. The BHO is an ideal system for low capacity, campaign-style destruction of organic materials, some of which may not be well characterizd. With its patented design, BHO provides the high destruction efficency of supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) in the less demanding processing environment of sub-critical water. More importantly, the system is fully contained to ensure full destruction and no accidental releases to the environmnet. Patent# 6,030,587 was issued February 29, 2000 for this invention. If you are interested in this technology, please send a written expression of interest to Ben Wu, MS9105, Sandia National Laboratories, P.O. Box 969, Livermore, CA 94551 (FAX: 925-294-1217) by August 1, 2000. This should include details about your company and its product line, potential commercial interest for the invention and any other details of interest. (Ben Wu EMAIL: bcwu@sandia.gov).
