The Eastern Administrative Support Center (EASC) intends to acquire for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Northeast Fisheries Science Center contract services with the Center for Coastal Studies, Inc. to conduct a study of genetic profiling of the North Atlantic right whales. The Center is in possession of a large number of samples from western North Atlantic right whales; has the availability of micro-satellite and MHC primers specific to right whales; and has collected skin biopsy samples of the individuals known to be in the western North Atlantic right whale population. Their extensive library of species-specific nuclear genetic markers are necessary for the successful completion of work to be performed. The aims of the work are to continue and expand genetic analysis on northern right whales from the critically endangered western North Atlantic population. Genetic profiling of the population will include DNA from new samples added to the archive during the period of study. The genetic approaches to be used will address a variety of questions including: (a) census size of the population; (b) the degree of population sub-structuring; (c) the effective size of the population; and (d) relationship between MHC genotype and reproductive success and survival. The anticipated solicitation issue date is 15 days after the date of this synopsis. No contract award will be made on the basis of any quotation received in response to this notice since this synopsis cannot be considered a Request for Quotation.
