The purpose of this contract is to evaluate the toxicologic and carcinogenic potential of selected chemicals in laboratory animals used as dietary supplements and/or herbal medicines. This project include 90-day and 2-year studies of chromium picolinate, goldenseal, milk thistle, thujone and androstenedione. The base contract award shall consist of those work activities associated with determination of bulk chemical purity and identity, and validation of dose formulation/analysis methods, any health and safety concerns that must be addressed before study start, and other aspects specifically included in Phase 1 for Task 1 (androstenedione, Task 2 (goldenseal), Task 3 (milk thistle), Task 4 (thujone), and Task 5 (chromium picolinate). The Government may, pending the availability of funds exercise options for: 90-day study androstenedione, a two-year study of androstenedione (Task 1); 90-day study of goldenseal, a two-year study of goldenseal (Task 2); 90-day study of milk thistle, a two-year study of milk thistle (Task 3); 90-day study of thujone, two-year study of thujone (Task 4); and 90-day study of chromium picolineate, two-year study of chromium picolinate (Task 5). These studies shall be conducted according to the Specifications for the Conduct of Studies to Evaluate the Toxicologic and Carcinogenic Potential of Selected Chemicals in Laboratory Animals for the National Toxicology Program (NTP) dated June 2000. Award of one cost-reimbursement completion contract on June 1, 2001 on an open competition basis is contemplated as a result of this solicitation. The estimated level of effort is 1,400 labor hours for the base contract and 127,250 labor hours for all options. The estimated period of performance is approximately 52 months.
