SAOX2, Silver Spring, MD 20910 66 -- METEOROLOGICAL PARTICLE SENSOR SOL 52-SPNA-0-00081 DUE 090100
POC Donald Thompson, Contracting Officer, 301-713-2110 x 116 The NOAA
Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) program has a need for a
commercial-off-the-shelf instrument, Meteorological Particle Sensor
(MPS), capable of measuring particle sizes of falling liquid
precipitation (drizzle). The instrument and associated equipment shall
be suitable for installation in an outdoor environment with
weather-tight enclosures, cables, and sensing elements. The
ground-based instrument shall be capable of measuring particle sizes
from 50 to 1000 micrometers in diameter. Additionally, the sensor shall
measure the number density of particle sizes from 50 to 1000
micrometers in diameter. The sensor shall have a 50-micron particle
size resolution. The sensor shall measure precipitation rates from 0.1
to 15 millimeters per hour with a resolution of 0.1 millimeters per
hour. Precipitation rate and drop size distribution information will be
updated once per minute. The sensor shall be capable of providing
accurate drop size distribution and accumulation rate information at
wind speeds ranging from calm to 15 meters per second. The Government
desires to determine liquid water accumulation from these particles,
with a one-minute temporal resolution. The instrument shall operate on
single phase commercial power. The Government intends to purchase up
to two commercial sensors which can meet the NWS MPS requirement. The
sensors will be installed at the Sterling, Virginia NWS test site.
Vendors may request a copy of the complete MPS requirement from the
contact person within one week of CBD issuance and should respond on or
before September 1, 2000. Interested parties should send a request for
the MPS requirement to Annette E. Stevens, 1325 East-West Highway,
