The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with Asylum Research Corporation, 601 Pine Avenue, Santa Barbara, CA 93117 under authority of FAR 13.106-1(b)(1) for a Molecular Force Probe For Inverted Optical Microscope under a rent with option to purchase agreement. This single molecule puller is a state-of-the-art, one-of- a-kind instrument that has been developed by Asylum Research and is the first and only instrument of its kind on the market. It is uniquely suited to our needs in developing a program in single molecule probes, and will be modified and integrated into a home-made apparatus that will combine optical with mechanical single molecule probes. No other similar instruments exist with proven track records. Only an Asylum Research MFP will meet the needs of our program. Atomic force microscopes have a similar function in some respects, but are not designed specifically to optimize single molecule force experiments and are not easily integrated into our existing laboratory apparatus. The Government intends to rent the item from September 2000 through December 2000. FOB Designation Gaithersburg, MD. No solicitation package will be issued. This notice of intent is not a request for competitive quotations. However, all responses received by August 10, 2000 will be considered by the Government. Information received will be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement.
