A. Gerould, kgerould@pica.army.mil. The U.S. Army Tank-automotive and
Armaments Command, Armament Research, Development and Engineering
Center (TACOM-ARDEC), Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, has a requirement
for a concept to develop a Systems Integration Strategy for a virtual
factory. The proposed contractual action is for the outlining of a
conceptual technical approach for the development of an integrated
system to run a virtual factory for the acquisition of ammunition metal
parts. The system will link metal parts manufacturers, special process
vendors, and government procurement activities. It is envisioned that
a network of metal parts manufacturers will provide the manufacturing
operations necessary to supply metal parts for final assembly,
loading, packing, and shipping. If this concept is proven to be
successful, it will be expanded to include the manufacture of larger
caliber ammunition, and spare parts for weapons. A systems integration
effort will be required to coordinate qualification of vendors,
acquisition, order placement, delivery, inventory control, and parts
inspection. This effort will also explore the requirements necessary to
establish a cooperative effort among manufacturers to supply these
metal parts. The following annual production information is an estimate
based on recent historical data, and is provided as sample data to
assist potential offerors in the development of their quotes, and to
assist in determining the scale of effort required for this project:
(a) small caliber (5.56mm to 0.5 cal) 200.0 million rounds; (b) cannon
caliber (20mm to 40mm) 6.2 million rounds, and (c) large caliber
(105mm to 155mm) 0.8 million rounds. The release date of the Request
for Quote (RFQ) is anticipated to be 31 Jul 00, and can be downloaded
from the following website: http://www.procnet.pica.army.mil. The point
of contact for this action is Ms. Kelly A. Gerould, AMSTA-CM-CPD, (973)
