The National Library of Medicine (NLM or the Library), a part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, is the world's largest medical library. The Library collects materials in all areas of biomedicine and health care, as well as works on biomedical aspects of technology, the humanities, and the physical, life, and social sciences. The collections stand at 5.3 million items-books, journals, technical reports, manuscripts, microfilms, photographs and images. The Library also maintains one of the world's finest medical history collections of old and rare medical texts, manuscripts, and incunabula. The public may view the Library's through several methods such as reading rooms or through interlibrary loan. The Exhibition Program expands on the Library's mission to provide health information to the public. Since 1996, the Exhibition Program has produced significant exhibitions about history, science, medicine, and technology for installation in the Library's lobby and rotunda galleries.The purpose of this contract is to establish support services for the Exhibition Program at the Library for fabrication of moderate sized exhibitions, and rehabilitation and additions to existing museum-quality exhibitions. The work will include traveling to the Library to meet with exhibition staff, exhibition designers and other consultants; purchasing objects and photographs, rights and use fees, and fine arts insurance; consulting with Library staff, exhibition designer and other consultants during the development and production process; inspecting exhibition sites; assessing the rehabilitation of existing exhibitions; fabricating exhibition furniture and temporary exhibitions; maintaining existing exhibitions; preparing production schedules and cost estimates for the work; providing measurements; and fabricating and installing the exhibitions; dismantling exhibitions and shipping and storing furniture and graphic panels. Design services are not required. All responsible small businesses may submit a proposal, which will be considered by the NLM. It is anticipated that the Request for Proposal NLM 00-108/SAN will be available on or about fifteen (15) days from the publication of this announcement.
