INFORMATION ONLY. The US Army CECOM RDEC is seeking sources and
information for the Hand-Held Display and Keyboard. This component will
be utilized as part of a combined assortment of products that represent
a wearable computing system for a host of applications, to include
civilian, military and professional uses. This component would be an
integral part of the user's ability to operate the system in a safe,
unobtrusive and mobile environment. Mobile -- can be carried, worn,
and/or portably stored on an individual Durable -- has or can be
protected from harsh environments Lightweight -- minimal physical
burden on an individual, easy to carry and manipulate Energy efficient
-- uses low power, contains or can draw from low power sources
Survivable -- is operable in varied weather, climate and geographic
conditions As applicable, respondents should identify the performance
characteristics of their product(s) that addresses the above, to
include physical/electrical interface(s), physical dimensions and
software compatibility. Availability of product, and examples of its
use are also requested. Desired performance characteristics of the
component shall consist of all weather, day and night operation. This
component should be an integral part of a system that enhances one or
more performance characteristics as applied toward a wearable computing
set of hardware and its applications. REQUIREMENTS: The Hand-Held
Display and Keyboard will be operated for situation awareness (maps and
overlays), planning and messaging. They will operate with CPU's running
Windows 2000 or Windows CE. Unit must be portable in leg pocket or
backpack without damage. Must operate after immersion in 1 m of water.
Display characteristics: -- Size: 6" to 9" inch diagonal -- Resolution
of 800x600 pixels -- Full color is desired -- Day and night readable --
Night vision device compatible -- Touch-screen input Keyboard
characteristics: -- QWERTY format -- ASCII characters—Night
readable The Hand-Held Display and Keyboard may be separate devices or
combined in one unit. Interface to IEEE STD 1394a is desired, but
battery and wireless connection will be considered. PROPRIETARY
INFORMATION IS NOT BEING SOLICITED. The government will not reimburse
contractors or responders to this notice for any costs incurred in
responding, or in subsequent exchanges of information. Organizations
having the expertise and capabilities to provide the required item are
invited to submit information discussing such capabilities. It should
be submitted not later than 21 August 2000 and should consist of a
total of no more than 25 pages, excluding any marketing and/product
brochures. NOTE: Information submitted does not constitute a proposal,
but will be considered an exchange of capabilities and ideas.
