The USEPA National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is primarily an engine testing facility where combustion exhaust emissions and fuel efficiency are measured. Testing operations require the use of specialized test fuels for the engines and high pressure cylinder gases for the chemical analysis systems. Engine fuels are stored in bulk and in 55-gallon drums. High pressure gas cylinders contain a variety of gases including a combustible H2/He mixture which is used as a fuel to operate analyzers. This project includes creation of a new H2/He gas cylinder storage area under the existing lift platform roof, expansion of the lift platform roof shelter area to improve control of winter precipitation, installation of a new fuel drum storage building near the lab to accommodate installation of new fuel supply lines to the fuel bay, and construction of a new non-flammable cylinder storage area. The bulk of the work consists of steel building construction including foundation, structural support and roof installation and modification. Other work includes concrete and steel demolition and construction, explosion proof electrical lighting and construction of a canvas/vinyl enclosure.
