B -- OPTIMIZING VAGINAL DEPLOYMENT OF TOPICAL MICROBICIDES SOL A60872 POC Dee Gibson, Contract Administrator 301 827-7177 The Food and Drug Administration intends to award a purchase order on a sole source basis to continue a project which was developed in collaboration with Duke University entitled: Vaginal Volumizing: Optimizing vaginal deployment of topical microbicides. Duke University has begun to analyze biophysical properties of a number of test gels, and mechanistic relationships between these properties and characteristics of gel spreading and retention in the vagina. The scope of work will encompass the in-vivo study and mechanistic in-vitro analysis of formulation properties and their relations to salient measures of intravaginal spreading and retention. Results of the studies will then be linked in a follow up integrative analysis. Finally, Duke will interpret these results in the context of the FDA mission to employ science-based testing of new products and to provide biologically incisive guidance on the foci for such testing.
