Of Commerce/NOAA/NMFS/Office of Protected Resources intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with The Marine Mammal Center for continuation of services started in a previous procurement to provide research and analyses on Phocine Herpes Virus 1 (PhHV-1) in harbor seals. The objective is to use harbor seals as a model for epidemiological and pathogenesis studies of PhHV-1. The epidemiology of PhHV-1 is unknown, however there is the potential for this virus to impact stressed populations and reduce survival and reproductive success, therefore this disease should be evaluated in a model species to determine the risks to endangered species such as Hawaiian monk seals.
