"With a population of over a billion people", stated USTDA Director J. Joseph Grandmaison, "it stands to reason that India is a prime market for U.S. companies wishing to expand their overseas sales. Towards that end and following up on President Clinton's historic visit to India in March, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency is especially pleased to have organized this important visit". The specific areas of interest include 500 solid state interlocking systems; digital mobile train radio communications systems; 11,250 miles of overhead alignment to be replaced by optical fiber optic; implement radio-based signaling; preparing 4,000 locomotives for signaling applications; long-range decision support system technology for capacity expansion, planning and market analysis; automatic warning systems and other safety signal engineering equipment; track machines such as tampers, cleaners and stabilizers; and technology for rail wheel lubrication, wheel flat detection systems, and heavy haul systems.
