COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 21,2000 PSA#2668 META-MATERIALS WORKSHOP Meta-Materials Workshop, SN00-26. The Defense
Sciences Office (DSO) of the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency
(DARPA) is sponsoring a workshop on the development and demonstration
of "meta-materials" for DoD applications. This workshop will be held
September 29, 2000, at the Greenbelt Marriott in Greenbelt, MD.
Meta-materials are engineered nanocomposites that exhibit superior
properties not observed in the constituent materials or nature. The
superior properties of meta-materials are derived from the inclusion of
artificially fabricated, extrinsic, low dimensional inhomogeneities.
The goal of the Meta-Materials Workshop is to explore areas of interest
to DARPA in the development and demonstration of novel meta-materials
that will afford new and/or enhanced capabilities for a number of
applications crucial to the military services. In addition this
Workshop will provide a forum for interested parties to explore
potential teaming opportunities in anticipation of a future program
solicitation in this area. Although meta-materials can be found in
every branch of materials science, DARPA's interest in meta-materials
is focused in the following two broad categories: 1) low frequency
(< 1 MHz) meta-materials with superior magnetic properties for power
electronics, electric propulsion, and/or magnetic power generation; and
2) high frequency (> 1 MHz) meta-materials with superior microwave
and/or optical properties for telecommunication and wireless power
transfer applications. It is believed that the development of novel
meta-materials in these areas will facilitate the development of new
design concepts that exploit their unique properties. For more
information on DARPA's interests in Meta-Materials, please visit the
"Future Areas of Interest" area of the DSO Web site at
http://www.darpa.mil/dso. The Meta-Materials Workshop agenda will
feature several overview presentations by government personnel on a
number of applications for which there is a crucial need for materials
with properties that currently do not exist. In addition, there will
be several presentations highlighting examples of recent developments
in synthesis and processing techniques that have been a motivating
factor in developing the meta-material concept. There will also be
poster session forums to facilitate interaction and team forming
amongst the participants. Workshop attendees are strongly encouraged to
prepare posters and very short (2-3 minute) summary overview
presentations describing areas of capabilities and interest in order to
stimulate communications, interactions, and team prospecting. A short
abstract of each poster presentation is required. Attendees are also
strongly encouraged (although not required) to submit an electronic
version of their poster presentations. Attendees must register on-line
at http://www.sainc.com/conference/View/index.asp?MeetingID=130.
Presentation abstracts must be submitted at registration. The workshop
registration fee is $120 and is inclusive of all workshop activities.
Registration cutoff is September 14, 2000, or at attendance capacity.
Space is limited and it is recommended that you register early. For
further administrative information contact Ronetta Andino
(randino@snap.org). Please refer to the "Meta-Materials Workshop" in
correspondence. This announcement is NOT a request for proposals. No
solicitation document is available at this time. DARPA anticipates, but
cannot guarantee, that a solicitation will follow the workshop. WEB:
