The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Space Science is releasing a NASA Research Announcement (NRA 00-OSS-06), entitled Gossamer Spacecraft Exploratory Research and Technology. Gossamer spacecraft technology development is focused on revolutionary architectures for very large, ultra-lightweight structures and apertures. This NRA will solicit proposals for exploratory research to begin long-range development of Gossamer spacecraft technology in two areas of emphasis: large apertures for breakthrough imaging and solar sails. Proposals will be due about 45 days after formal release of the NRA. A Notice of Intent to propose will be requested for all proposals about 15 days after release of the NRA. Participation is open to all categories of organizations, foreign and domestic, including industry, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, NASA centers, and other Government agencies.
