Description
PALM POWER WORKSHOP, SN00-28. The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is sponsoring a team-forming workshop on portable energy conversion technology with the purpose of developing concepts that will lead to a dramatic increase in mission endurance of individual soldier and robotic systems. This workshop will be held November 14 and 15, 2000, at the Wyndham Resort and Spa in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The goal of this workshop is to explore all facets of research necessary to create new technologies based on conversion of high-energy content fuels to electrical or mechanical energy on a small scale at or around the 20-Watt power range. The challenge of developing small energy conversion devices will increase as the system size shrinks. System specific energy goals, on the order of thousands of Whr/kg, are well beyond the capabilities of present day or future batteries. Radically new approaches will be required. Conventional designs incorporating off-the-shelf materials and components are not likely to meet the specific energy targets of interest to DARPA. Technology topics include but are not limited to catalysis, combustion, advanced materials for thermal conductivity and insulation, thermal management and integration, multifunctional materials, compact integrated fuel processors, system integration, novel fabrication/materials processing methods, thermally integrated cascading systems, direct thermal to electric or mechanical systems, microchemical reactors, and integrated MEMS components. Low temperature internally reforming or direct oxidation solid oxide fuel cells are of particular interest, but no system concepts will be excluded from consideration. The workshop agenda will feature several technology and concept overview presentations by government personnel and several poster session forums including brief oral presentations to facilitate interaction and team prospecting amongst the participants. Participants are strongly encouraged to prepare posters and very short summary overview presentations describing areas of capabilities and interest. A short abstract of each poster presentation is required and will be distributed to all participants at the workshop. Participants will be allowed 3 minutes to present an executive summary of their poster. Please access the Palm Power website, http://www.sainc.com/conference/View/index.asp?MeetingID=133, for workshop details including registration and abstract submission. Participants are strongly encouraged to visit the Palm Power teaming website at http://www.sainc.com/darpa/palmpower in order to enable additional teaming opportunities for those unable to attend the workshop or those who would like to initiate teaming arrangements beforehand. This announcement is NOT a request for proposals. No solicitation document is available at this time. DARPA anticipates, but cannot guarantee, that a solicitation will follow the workshop. The workshop registration fee is $200.00 and is inclusive of all workshop activities. Registration cutoff is October 16, 2000, or at attendance capacity. Space is limited and it is recommended that you register early. For further administrative information contact Leanne Wiegand (lwiegand@snap.org). Please include "Palm Power Workshop" in the subject line.
