Description

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with the University of Maryland, Institute for Physical Science and Technology, College Park, Maryland, for the development of computational algorithms and software required to model loading of a zero-temperature Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) into an optical lattice. The Contractor shall (1) identify the most significant corrections needed to treat finite, low-temperature systems, and incorporate these into the code, (2) model effects of quantum state decoherence due to effects of lattice jitter or imperfection and to unresolved thermal background noise, and (3) Investigate prospects for exploitation of the nonlinear equations of motion of a BEC to attain quantum state entanglement, or to provide other new mechanisms for implementation of quantum logic. Deliverables shall include progress reports and computer codes. F.O.B. Destination, Gaithersburg, Maryland. The period of performance shall be one year from date of award. This is a sole source requirement because the key personnel from the University of Maryland include the original author of several of the NIST computer codes that must be used to pursue this work. As the task requires significant modification and extension of these codes, the University of Maryland's team is uniquely qualified to perform this work within the required time. An award shall be made using simplified acquisition procedures approximately 9/28/00 . No solicitation package is available. See Note 26.
