4th Annual DoD Maintenance Symposium & Exhibition October 30 -- November 2, 2000 Event #1740 The Department of Defense is facing significant challenges integrating new weapon systems and advanced technologies into a combat force that also includes systems that are more than 30 years old and expected to remain in service indefinitely. In order to improve support for this mixture of old and new, DoD is employing a wide range of revolutionary techniques never before attempted. Overall, DoD is seeking to develop programs that afford faster, better and less costly support operations. Maintenance management is the central focus of many of the initiatives underway. With annual maintenance expenditures in excess of $40 billion per year and a work force of over 700,000 personnel, the sheer size of the effort spotlights maintenance as a key area in which to explore innovation. This Symposium is uniquely focused on DoD weapon system and equipment maintenance. It brings together government and industry maintenance managers of all ranks and levels that represent the full range of maintenance operations within both DoD and industry. This is an outstanding opportunity for government and industry representatives to meet and exchange ideas for improvement of maintenance practices and procedures. Additionally, the Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards for 2000 are presented to the outstanding maintenance units, with the Phoenix Award presented to the best maintenance organization at the Symposium Awards Dinner.
