- Description
- Commerce Business Daily Ad Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Seeks Industrial Partners to Commercialize An Innovative Process for the Treatment of Contaminated HEPA Filters. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy is seeking industrial partners for the commercialization of a technology for the treatment of contaminated HEPA filters. HEPA filters are used to remove contaminants from air in order to protect worker health and the environment. They are often used in the most hazardous of environments as a last line of defense against a variety of airborne contaminants such as radionuclides, toxic metals, pathogenic bacteria, and viruses. There are numerous obstacles to the disposal of the spent HEPA filters. LLNL has developed an innovative technology for the treatment of contaminated HEPA filters. The technology, known as, In Situ Stabilization and Filter Encapsulation (IS SAFE) process, was developed to process spent filters contaminated with toxic and radioactive materials. It can be used to process the filters to pass regulatory leachate tests and also makes handling of contaminated, spent filters significantly safer. The process may also be adapted to treat other waste types (ie. debris, porous media) to pass regulatory leachate tests. Prototypes of a system incorporating the IS SAFE technology have been built and tested. The results of the tests demonstrate the potential of the technology. The LLNL "IS SAFE" process compares very favorably with existing technologies. Some of the advantages are: no secondary waste stream is generated, simple process, one stage process, minimal worker handling of contaminated filter, low equipment cost, can be set?up with minimal demands on infrastructure, applicable to both stainless steel and wood frame HEPA filters, adaptable to remote operation if required, and does not require a high level of working skill. Companies interested in working with LLNL to commercialize the technology should provide a written statement of interest that includes a description of corporate capability relevant to commercialization of the technology and basic corporate information. Respondents are encouraged to provide ancillary documentation such as annual reports, corporate resumes, and technical publications. THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. All Letters of Interest must be received within 45 days of this announcement. Please send Letters of Interest to Eddie Scott, Business Development Specialist, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, 7000 East Avenue, Mail Stop L?795, Livermore, CA 94550?9234, Attention: CBD?00?022/254.
