Description

The U.S. Army TACOM/ARDEC intends to contract for the development of high strain rate data for polymer composites, in magnitudes greater than 10 to power of 3. This will be accomplished by measuring the shearing strength of the interface between fibers and the shearing response of an epoxy resin matrix. Preliminary design of a two-plate experiment for tensile loading of fibers at very high loading rates will be done to determine its feasibility. The research to be conducted will be threefold: (1)to obtain experimental information on the shearing strength of the interface between carbon fiber epoxy composite at very high shearing rates; (2) to obtain experimental information on the shearing resistance of carbon fiber epoxy composite at shearing rates above 100,000/second; (3) to design an experiment for conducting dynamic tensile tests at straining rates above 100,000/second. The experimental effort will be conducted largely in the plate impact facility at Brown University. This action will be a sole source award to Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.
