Description
X-ray absorptiometry scanning instrument for measurement of whole-body and regional bone mineral status and soft tissue composition of humans. The following characteristics are required: 1) Utilize energies of 100 and 140 kilovolts potential through switched x-ray productions to eliminate effects of energy discrimination, spillover, escape peaks, and dead-time on bone mineral density measurements, 2) X-ray tube to stationary anode operated at 5 milliamps nominal, 3) The instrument must have a minimum of 64 solid state detectors, 4) The device must be self-calibrating. The calibration method shall use a permanent calibration material of known composition that shall be compared to any unknown being evaluated by the system on a point by point basis throughout alternate sampling of known and unknown materials. Body soft tissue composition calibration utilizes an external step phantom, 5) The unit must be able to perform whole-body measurements in 300 seconds, anterior-posterior spine and femur measurements in 30 seconds, and forearm in 30 seconds for bone mineral content, area and density measurements, and 6) Data for all applications (bone and body composition) derived from this instrument must be compatible with QDR2000. All technical questions should be directed to: Darlyne Myrvik at 701-795-8445. All procurement and responses should be directed to: Richard Jansen, Contracting Officer, USDA-ARS-NPA, 1201 Oakridge Dr., Suite 150, Fort Collins, CO 80525-5562 at 970-229-5517.
