Description
Services code B Supply codes #65 Medical Equipment, #66 Instruments and Lab Equipment, #78 Recreational Athletic Equipment, #89 Subsistence (Food) The Wake Forest University School of Medicine, in collaboration with the investigators of the Study of Health Outcomes of Weight Loss (SHOW), is seeking to identify potential industry partners for the study. SHOW is a major, 12 year, NIH-sponsored, multi-center, randomized clinical trial now in the design phase. The trial will compare usual care plus an intensive lifestyle intervention designed to produce long-term weight loss to usual care. The primary outcome of the study will be cardiovascular events. In addition, SHOW will investigate the impact of the interventions on a number of other outcomes, including cardiovascular risk factors (such as lipids and blood pressure), glycemic control, diabetic eye disease, psychosocial factors and economic impact. Beginning in June 2001, 5000 to 6000 obese participants with type 2 diabetes will be recruited into SHOW over a 2-3 year period at 16 clinical sites geographically distributed throughout the United States. Those participants in the active lifestyle group will receive an intensive weight loss intervention for one year, followed by a maintenance intervention for three additional years and a follow up period lasting approximately 5 years. The SHOW design committees anticipate that a number of products will be needed for the study, especially during the intensive and maintenance phases. These include, but are not limited to: glucose meters and strips, ECG machines, blood pressure measuring devices, weight loss food products and meal replacements, exercise equipment and apparel, scales, and laboratory devices for local testing of lipids and HbA1c. The SHOW investigators invite collaborations with potential industrial sponsors in the areas listed above, as well as others relating to the care of diabetes, interventions for weight-loss, or conduct of a major multi-center study. Proposals, letters of interest and all inquires may be submitted in writing to Mimi Hodges, Department of Public Health Sciences, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Medical Center Blvd., Winston Salem, North Carolina 27157 or tel. (336) 713-4715 or e-mail mhodges@wfubmc.edu. Interested parties can also access the SHOW Website at show.phs.wfubmc.edu.
