Description

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is seeking sources for an Automatic Flat Tray Lidder (AFTL). The AFTL is a self-contained unit having the ability to pick a cover or lid from a stack of lids and install the lid on a flat mail tray. Flat mail is mail larger than letter-sized mail, and made up of large envelopes, magazines, catalogs, and some newspapers. The objective is to obtain a basic, compact, and highly reliable AFTL machine. The machine will operate so that a mail tray will be fed lengthwise from a conveyor for lid installation. The machine will have the capability to detect whether the tray has a lid it or not. The AFTL will only place lids on trays without lids. The machine throughput (net operating rate) shall not be less than 700 trays per hour. Suppliers that have similar machines that can be adapted to perform the functions of the AFTL are encouraged to submit their company's name, address, contact person and telephone number, for receipt of a possible future solicitation. If no commercial machines are available in the marketplace, the USPS may finalize development of its own AFTL. A competitive test may be conducted between competing machines and/or competing USPS prototype designs to select the best machine for a small production contract. The current estimate for an initial production quantity is 100 units.
