- Description
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) is sponsoring a workshop to support the process of identifying the advanced technology needed to enable critical Earth science missions with launch dates 5 to 15 years in the future. NASA's New Millennium Program (NMP) and the Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) will host the workshop on January 23-24, 2001 at the Hyatt Arlington Hotel in Arlington, VA. This workshop will focus specifically on instrument and spacecraft technologies that are likely to require a validation in space before they can be incorporated into a science mission. It is open to U.S. industry, academia, Federally Funded Research and Development Centers, and government agencies. The NMP and ESTO have identified eight (8) areas of spacecraft and instrument subsystems where advanced technologies are needed to enable one or more future ESE measurements. These include: (1) Large, Light-Weight Deployable Antennas, (2) Ultra-High Data Rate Communications, (3) Light-Weight Deployable UV/Visible/IR Telescopes, (4) Intelligent Distributed-Spacecraft Infrastructure, (5) Precision Navigation, (6) Onboard Processing, (7) Integrated Optics and Spectral Dispersion Technologies, and (8) Laser Technology. A separate breakout focus session will be held for each of the eight topics listed above. A ninth breakout session for "Innovative Technologies" is also included to encompass other advanced technology needs not explicitly included in the list above. A draft Agenda and specific information describing advance technology needs is posted on the NMP website at http://nmp.jpl.nasa.gov/ . Individuals and/or corporations planning to attend are requested to pre-register by completing the electronic registration form provided on the NMP website. For planning purposes, REGISTRATION should be made by January 16, 2001. Participants in the workshop may express an interest in presenting related innovative technology ideas in one of the workshop breakout sessions. For this purpose, a presentation request form is located on the NMP website. Questions concerning the workshop should be directed to David T. Spencer at the New Millennium Program Office, (818) 354-4892 or via e-mail: David.T.Spencer@jpl.nasa.gov
