Description

The Research Service @ Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care System, 385 Tremont Avenue, E. Orange, NJ 07018 intends to award a sole source contract to Dr. Xu of University of Medicine & Dental, New Jersey Medical School, Dept. of Medicine, 185 South Orange Avenue, Newark, NJ 07103 as specified on Veteran Affairs Merit Review Research Grant to construct various acute and chronic surgical modesl (Bile fistula, lymph fistula, perfused intestine, etc.) in a number of animal species (rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, nutria, rats, etc.) for purpose of studying bile acid and neutral sterol metabolism. Devise and construct necessary fixtures and surgical implants and work out proper ansthesia and pre and post surgical care to ensure long term survivals (one to four weeks). Design experiments utilizing these models to study bile acid and sterol metabolism employing, but not limited to techniques of radioisotope labeling. Collect necessary tissues and fluids (bile, blood, urine, etc.) and analyze them for sterol and radioactive content by gas liquid, thin-layer and high performance liquid chromatography and scintillation counting, and interpretation of results.
