Description

Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Vehicles Directorate/ Control Sciences Division (AFRL/VAC) solicits research proposals on Autonomous Flight Control Sensing Technology. This program addresses vision based guidance, navigation, and control technologies for improvements in performance, safety, and reliability for Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) operating autonomously in FAA and theater airspace. The goal is to develop candidate affordable sensor architectures for autonomous UAV operations. This effort focuses on automation of the pilot's visualization of the situation (e.g., machine vision sensing), his interpretations (e.g., object recognition, range), and resulting guidance and control actions (e.g. approach/closure rate input). Situational awareness includes functions like airfield recognition, approach and landing, terrain monitoring, air collision avoidance, state information, refueling, health monitoring, etc. The overall goal is to develop and demonstrate a low cost, fault tolerant, day/night, all weather UAV visual information sensing and processing capability using passive sensing for covert operations.
