Description

The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC) intends to enter into a contract for research and development services with Clemson University (Clemson Applied Research Labs). The proposed contract will, in accordance with FAR 6.302-3(a)(2)(ii), be to maintain an essential research and development capability in aerostat materials, technologies and manufacturing. Clemson's research and development capability and aerostat technology base will be used to further state-of-the-art research in support of the industrial base. This effort entitled, "Aerostat Design and Manufacturing (ADaM) Research Program," will include aerostat advanced material design, modeling and simulation, and laboratory testing. The contractor will define (1) new test processes to qualify new fabrics; (2) analysis of aging factors of current and future aerostat materials; (3) improved materials manufacturing quality control processes; and (4) high volume production processes for advanced materials. The contractor will design, develop, and test an improved lightning protection system; provide weather statistics and instrumentation to sense and predict adverse weather conditions; and recommend tether upgrades and aerostat life cycle management. The contractor will investigate methods for damage mitigation and control and IR/Visual signature predictions and control. The period of performance for this effort will be forty-eight (48) months.
