Description
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) , U.S. Department of Commerce, intends to negotiate with only one source , the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309-0572, for the development and study of quantum logic devices based on entangled states of trapped, laser-cooled ions. The quantum-logic devices developed under this program are experimental elements for laboratory study. The objective of the research is to improve the performance of simple quantum-logic elements through (1) the development of simplified means for the preparation of entangled states, (2) reduction of the rate of decoherence of the states, and (3) more efficient means for reading out the states of the devices. The work involves development of the = devices and subsequent study of the physics upon which they are based with emphasis on the development of an understanding of the entangled states and the mechanisms that cause their decoherence. The facilities at = NIST are critical to the conduct of the research. Thus, it is essential = that the work take place at NIST with researchers who are physically located in proximity to the NIST facilties. Also, the development and study of quantum-logic systems with trapped ions requires skills in trapping and laser cooling of ions, entanglement of the states of these ions, = methods for determining the ion states, and methods for decoupling the noise of the laboratory from the experiments. Three years of work in this specific field following a completion of a Ph.D. in physics is the minimum background needed to contribute to this study. The University of Colorado has the resource necessary to meet the Government=92s requirements. This notice may represent the only official notice of a solicitation. See Note 22.
