- Description
- SAO possess unique knowledge of experience of satellite laser ranging which is invaluable to NASA and could not be obtained from another source. Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) is a unique field that is the fundamental measurement technique used by NASA to support both national and international programs in earth dynamics, ocean and ice surface altimetry, navigation and positioning, and technology development. The SLR technique, which uses short pulse lasers and fast timing electronics to measure the round trip travel time to satellites equipped with retroreflector arrays, was first developed by NASA's GSFC in the early 1960's as a tool for precision orbit determination and validation of radio tracking techniques. An market research analysis of other organizations was conducted and a determination was made that no other organization possessed the unique capabilities of SAO to provide the technical knowledge required to perform this contract. SAO has 35 years of experience in Satellite Laser Ranging, developing instrumentation, deployment of field systems, and analysis and interpretation of data. SAO is world renown in technical and organizational experience and is respected worldwide for a long history of organizing international satellite tracking activities. SAO has international contacts in over 20 countries and demonstrated acceptance by the European, Asian, and Russian engineering analysis, and scientific geodynamics community. SAO is recognized for their experts in satellite laser ranging bringing strong technical experience to benefit NASA programs
