Description

NASA and NOAA are organizing a workshop to consolidate science data requirements for global wind observations in a number of areas of atmospheric research. The workshop is part of a joint exploration of a Global Tropospheric Wind Sounder (GTWS) mission as a scientific data buy. A baseline set of scientific requirements will be integrated with those for operational numerical weather prediction to establish the overall data requirements for a GTWS mission. The workshop will include an open plenary session, break-out discussions, and a summary session. The plenary session will be open and will consist of invited presentations, which will cover the requirements for space-based wind profile data for a variety of scientific applications. Topics will include: current and planned observations of Tropospheric winds, lidar measurement of wind and requirement for and potential application of space-based lidar winds for: tropical dynamics, chemistry, mesoscale meteorology, dynamics of weather systems, tropical cyclone forecasting, climate and numerical weather prediction. The GTWS Workshop will be held February 26 -- 28, 2001 at the Marriott Hotel in Greenbelt, MD, with the open plenary session on February 26.
