- Description
- By Presidential Executive Order, the National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC) will expire on October 3, 2001. Throughout its existence, NBAC has held over 45 public meetings and has made meeting transcripts and materials publicly available through web access. Reports and recommendations have been published and presented to The White House, U.S. government agencies and have also been made available to the public. As required by law, materials from federal advisory committees are deposited in the National Archives. However, NBAC also seeks to archive official documents, including meeting transcripts and briefing books, final drafts and published reports, public comment and correspondence, with an established library or reference center for bioethics literature for use by researchers and students. The collection of documentary material will be provided to the recipient before the final termination date of NBAC's operation. NBAC seeks an institution with a graduate and undergraduate student body for which the official materials will serve as a resource for further study and research in bioethics. The institution's interest in, and collection development of bioethics materials, should be enhanced by the acquisition of NBAC reports, official meeting transcripts and other documents. The material provided by NBAC will be cataloged and indexed by the recipient institution. The indexing is to be made available to students and the public through a pre-existing library catalog. NBAC materials may also be made available by photocopying or interlibrary loan. Reference services will be provided on the use of the NBAC materials either by toll free telephone calls or on-site assistance. The reference librarians at the recipient institution must be experienced in bioethics literature and have knowledge of the history and published reports of NBAC. The specialized subject area of the NBAC materials make it essential that the staff of the recipient institution be highly qualified and trained in the subject areas most relevant to bioethics. This notice of request is not a Request for Proposal (RFP) nor is an RFP available. Please respond by written letter to Eric M. Meslin, Executive Director, National Bioethics Advisory Commission, 6705 Rockledge Drive, Suite 700, Bethesda, Maryland, 20892-7979. For further information, please call 301-402-4242.
