Description
The U.S. Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) is seeking information on potential technologies and approaches to develop preliminary design concepts for a reactive engine exhaust infrared (IR) signature control system for rotorcraft. This system is envisioned to employ variable geometry exhaust nozzling to maximize ejector driven cooling flow, reducing engine exhaust IR signatures, while providing the capability to eliminate engine performance penalties by opening the exhaust nozzle in low threat environments. The objectives of this effort are: 90% reduction in band I & IV engine and exhaust IR signatures, relative to current fleet aircraft, during threat operations, and no engine performance penalty, relative to an unsuppressed engine, during low threat operations. This system will employ self-actuation to react to threat sensors and manage ownship IR signatures through a control system that is coupled to the engine FADEC. This system must respond from the unsuppressed to the fully suppressed configuration in less than 2 seconds. The Army is interested in innovative approaches and technologies to achieve the objectives of this effort. This announcement is for information and planning purposes only and is not to be construed as a commitment by the Government. Information submitted should provide sufficient detail of the contractor's potential approaches, technologies, capabilities and past relevant experience to allow the Government to assess the credibility of the concepts. Responses are requested by April 27, 2001. Generation or submittal of classified data or Militarily Critical Technical Data is not authorized under this announcement. Address responses to Commander, U.S. Army AATD, AMSAM-RD-AA-I (Mr. Mac Dinning), Bldg 401, Lee Blvd, Fort Eustis, VA 23604-5577. Phone: 757-878-5476 Fax: 757-878-2053.
