Description

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a requirement for the design, manufacture, and installation of a smog chamber at the new EPA facility in Research Triangle Park, NC. The smog chamber is a rectangular box of fixed volume having four opaque walls and two transparent walls to allow illumination of a gas mixture to produce chemical reactions. The chamber shall be constructed of aluminum with opaque interior walls covered with TFE Teflon. The chamber dimensions shall be 8' 8' 8' giving a total volume of 14.5 cubic meters. Measurement precision must be 100 mil. The chamber must be sealed to hold 2" water at input flow of 0.1 ft3 per minute. The transparent walls shall be made of FEP Teflon or a similar material which shall allow radiation from UV black fluorescent lights to enter the chamber. The chamber must be capable of maintaining a constant chamber temperature at specified temperatures between 20-30 degrees C with a precision of 2 C. The chamber must have light banks to hold 160 -- 4 ft UV fluorescent bulbs and must comply with applicable building codes. The EPA anticipates a firm fixed price contract for this requirement.
